Those little extras to make a fine walking holiday into a totally memorable one

Our walking holidays will remain focussed on walking, but thanks to guests' input, our site highlights holidays which contain those little extras - the best time of year to come and enjoy Alpine flora, how to come to grips with WWII history in Authion, when to enjoy dancing evenings in Roquebillière, savouring the Holy Grail of home cooked vegetarian food in France, wild swimming - dunking your body in isolated Alpine lakes, and the area's sporting events.

History

From ancient man, to Templar activity, the salt route, the wealth of Brea paintings, to C20 WW activity of man - battles and the Maginot Line.

Fauna & Flora

Aside from the obvious attraction of our wolf week - the Mercantour boasts a vast array of fauna - of the furred and feathered variety, and the most diverse variety of plant life, thanks to the area's unique situation - half of France's plant species including a cool 20 which are endemic to the Mercantour.

Culture

Imagine being able to mix a walking holiday with a trip to the Jean Cocteau museum in Menton, or the Nice Carnaval, Menton Lemon Festival, or up in the hills, rock to Lu Rauba Capeu on Wednesday evenings in July and August, and join in the many Festivals - chestnut, cheese, honey!

Foodies

Spend a week feasting on home cooked mountain food (what a relief for many that vegetarian food is an easy choice!), try local "Vacherie" cheeses, enjoy "daube/polente", socca, and a fun chorale pizza evening. Head to the coast and enjoy a Michelin starred restaurant meal in Nice before you fly home - plenty of choice!! Alain Ducasse's choice..... The list of Michelin starred restaurants in Nice.

Water babies

With wild swimming being a top pastime - the hardy can dip their heels in the myriad mountain lakes and rivers in the area, or of course, swim in or dive into the Med. There's also two outdoor swimming pools within a 15 minute drive as well as an all singing and dancing "eco" swimming pool in Roquebilliere.

Sporting events

Why not use Berthemont les Bains as a base for your trail running adventures, your marathon running, endurance racing,  or mad off road cycling. If spectating petrol heads is more your cup of tea – try the Monte Carlo Rally in late January – Col de Turini 2014 – forthcoming sporting events will be posted on the late availability page.

Mountains

Holidays to appeal to the hard nut, “peak bagger” types, keen to tick a mountain off the list!  At present we can entice you up Gran Paradiso, the Tour de Gélas, with more to follow – keep an eye on our late availability or  new ideas page. We are also able to offer tailor mades if you have a small group of walkers – with a local mountain guide if technically required here in the Mercantour, or even Mont Blanc is not that far away!!
