Liguria - Perched Village

Head in the clouds and feet in the sea!!

As you are shown to your room in the charming village of Sainte Agnès, you can feel the sense of calm descending – the hustle of Nice airport and the A8 motorway soon becoming a distant memory.

For us the village has often been the start (or finish) of the bi-annual horse transhumance between the village and Le Boréon in the Mercantour. It’s very easy to be comfortable here as the pace of life is very un-Riviera!!

We have wanted to offer a walking week here as the countryside is stunning, not as severe as our home territory in the Mercantour, yet the effort expended affords superb views of the Mercantour massif to the north, and the shimmering Med to the south – with the promise of seeing Corsica bobbing up across the sea!

It is a great pleasure to walk in rolling country side, amongst the fragrance of lavender, rosemary and thyme.

From this region there is the real sense of the unique combination of influences which have shaped the Alpes-Maritimes. It is at a crossroads of Provence and Liguria to the west and east, and the Alps and the Med to the North and South.

Several of the walks start and finish in Sainte Agnès, and others in neighbouring villages so the drive time is limited.

While enjoying a superb view to the Med, the environment on Mont Razet at 1285m has a feel of the Alps.   Ascent/descent : 500m. Distance 7,8 Km
  • Day 3 Mont Carpano from Castellar. Take a hoof to the Italian border for this pleasant walk. The start point is the fortified village of Castellar – which is nestled in the hills above Menton. • Day 5 Day off to explore St Agnès village. Enjoy the village itself and soak up the atmosphere, or hop on the €1 down to Menton to enjoy the Italianate feel to this coastal town.
  • Day 6 Le Grand Mont from Castellar. After a refreshing chill day, the Grand Mont is a good step out. It is, at 1379m, the dominant peak of the area, slap bang on the Italian border, north of Castellar.   Ascent/descent : 1100m. Distance 13.5 Km
  • Day 7 Mont Agaisen from Sospel. A short drive takes us to the charming town of Sospel with its riverfront position and charming historic square, from where the walk takes us to Mont Agaisen at 666m.   Ascent/descent : 400m. Distance 8 Km
