Say the word "Provence" to almost anyone and their eyes start to glaze over. With justification of course, as beyond the romantic notion of the area, there is substance!

The traditional region of Provence is the departments of the Var, Vaucluse, Bouches-du-Rhone, a proportion of the Alpes de Haute Provence and the Alpes-Maritimes, so named as it was the first Roman province outside Italy.

Within this vast area lies such diversity as the plains of the Camargue, the hedonistic draw of Saint Tropez and the opportunity to feast your eyes on the landscapes that Van Gogh enjoyed.

Thanks to Peter Mayle's iconic "A Year in Provence", re-vitalised by the recent film starring Russell Crowe, the area remains as popular as ever.

Even with such a bounty, there is still the opportunity of getting away from it all and achieving the elusive "space between".

Beyond the mental image of lazy days in the sunshine, cicadas chirruping, lavender fields and lots of great markets, Provence is a perfect place for a great walking holiday awash with history, great eating and if you must - shopping!

We can offer you culture, coal mines (yes really) and car boot sales...

From Forcalquier, home to one of the best markets in the region, we will explore the wild peak of the Montagne de Lure, the astonishing Gorges de Verdon, Roussillon and the well known ochre gorges, plus some walks in historic villages nearer to "home".
