Why walking holidays in france?
Ten National Parks - the tenth, around the Calanques of Marseille - just opened in late 2011 plus a whole host of regional parks and reserves - the count varies from source to source.
A vast network of marked trails from the GRs (grandes randonnées) - grand in length and stature, down to smaller local routes. At the last count there were more than 100000 kilometres of paths, including the international "E" routes which are many thousands of kilometres long, and the G5 which cuts a swathe north to south down the mainland, the Via Alpina, and of course the GR52 which crosses the Alpes-Maritimes.
A chance encounter led us to the Mercantour in 2001, which boasts almost 700 square kilometres of National Park which borders onto the regional Parco delle Alpi Marittime in Italy, and then thanks to reccie'ing further afield; walking holidays with a difference in Provence and the French Riviera back country.
